Welcome

Welcome to Sequoia National Park & Kings Canyon National Park, where wildlife encounters and thrilling activities await you! These two national parks are some of the most iconic in both California, and the whole of the United States. Situated directly next to one another, they both offer an exceptional blend of awe-inspiring natural wonders, rich history, and unforgettable outdoor adventures.

History

Founded in 1890, Sequoia National Park is America's second-oldest national park, and was the first park to be founded to protect a living organism: the giant sequoia tree. These massive trees are also the park's namesake. Then in 1940, President Roosevelt added the second national park to the same area, Kings Canyon. This was done in order to preserve a geological phenomenon - the glacially formed Kings Canyon, which is one of the deepest canyons in North America. Since the Second World War, the two parks have been joined by the National Parks Service. They have captivated visitors for centuries, and their grandeur continues to leave an indelible mark on all who explore the enchanting wilderness found here.

Highlights: the best things to see

General Sherman Tree

The General Sherman Tree, which stands tall at 275 feet and boasts a base circumference of over 100 feet, is the world's largest tree by volume. The giant sequoia trees, also known as the Sierra redwoods, are the largest trees you can find. They are not the oldest trees, despite their size and relative resistance to wildfires, but they are known to live for over 3,400 years. Witnessing this giant sequoia is an awe-inspiring experience, and truly showcases the power and resilience of nature.

Kings Canyon Scenic Byway

Embark on a breathtaking drive along the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway, which winds its way through the heart of the park. Driving here is a great and laid back way to admire stunning vistas, cascading waterfalls, and towering granite cliffs as you traverse this scenic route.

Moro Rock

For those more adventurous hikers, and those who want panoramic vistas that will leave you speechless, conquer the Moro Rock Trail. This granite dome offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountains, valleys, and the Great Western Divide. Be prepared for an exhilarating climb up the steep steps to reach the summit.

Giant Forest

Sequoia National Park's forests are made up of tree groves, each with thousands of these iconic trees. One of the most iconic is the Giant Forest which situated at the heart of Sequoia National Park, and is home to the park's largest trees. The network of trails through this grove are a great way to see hundreds of towering sequoia trees. For a relatively easy walk, try the Congress Trail, which is a 2-mile paved path that takes you past General Sherman.

An easier walk that's accessible and family friendly, check out the Big Tree Trail boardwalk. For a slightly more challenging hike, don't miss Cedar Grove Overlook. This switchback trail takes around four hours to complete, and offers a scenic journey through the wilderness before taking you to the outlook.

Scenic Drives

Wildlife

Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park provide a haven for a diverse array of wildlife. Here are a few species you may encounter during your visit. When hiking somewhere with a lot of wildlife, it is very important to only observe them from a safe distance and refrain from feeding or interacting with them.

Black Bears

Keep your eyes peeled for American black bears as they roam the park. Black bears roam between both national parks, most often in the spring and fall, as they search for food. Remember to practice proper food storage techniques and maintain a respectful distance.

Mule Deer

Graceful and often seen grazing in meadows, mule deer are a common sight within the park's boundaries. They have a differently coloured coat depending on the season, and bucks shed their antlers each winter. If you are there in the summer, be sure to keep an eye out for the fawns!

Mountain Lions

Though rarely spotted, mountain lions inhabit the park's remote areas. These elusive creatures play a vital role in the park's ecosystem, but encountering one in the wild is an incredibly rare and extraordinary experience.

Birds

Birdwatchers will delight in the park's avian diversity. There are many opportunities for both bird watchers and photographers alike. Keep an eye out for the iconic peregrine falcon, great gray owl, and the vibrant western tanager among the many species that call this park home.

Climate: the best time to visit

The ideal time to visit Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park largely depends on your preferences and the activities you wish to undertake. There are things worth doing and seeing all year round, but generally, the parks enjoy mild summers and snowy winters.

Spring

Spring (April to June) brings vibrant wildflowers and cascading waterfalls as the snow begins to melt. The temperatures are moderate, making it an excellent time for hiking and wildlife sightings. However, some higher elevation trails may still be closed due to snow.

Autumn

Summer is the peak and busiest period at the parks. But as the summer crowds disperse, autumn (September to November) offers a quieter and more serene experience. The crisp air, stunning fall foliage, and lower visitation make it an ideal time for scenic drives, hiking, and wildlife photography.
